District Pinewood Derby
Where: Right here in Newtown! (staty tuned!)
Weigh-in & Registration: TBD
Race Day: TBD

This is what our track setup looks like. The picture was taken when we used to race
at Sandy Hook School.

Participation:
Open to all Pack 570 Cub Scouts, Tiger Cubs, and Leaders! The Cub Scout MUST enter his own car. This means that the Cub Scout must be present at "Inspection and Registration" to enter his car into competition.

Inspection:
Cars will be inspected during registration for compliance to the specifications set forth below. If a car does not pass inspection (too long, too heavy, altered wheel base, or the like), the owner will have an opportunity to bring the car into compliance. If the car cannot be brought into compliance before race time the car will be permitted to race but will not be eligible to participate for prizes.

Impound:
Cars will be impounded when registered. After being impounded, repairs will be limited to replacement of axles or wheels that are broken or lost during the race.

Specifications:
Body: The body in the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit must be used. Bodies of other materials will be grounds for disqualification. The body may be shaped, hollowed out, or built up from the original block, as long as it meets all other specifications. Any additions to the original body, i.e. steering wheels, drivers, decals, paint, weights, etc., must be firmly attached.

Width: The car width at the wheels may not be modified; it must be the same as the original kit. The car width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2 3/4”. The minimum width between the wheels shall be 1 3/4 " so the car will clear the center guide strip on the track.

Clearance: The minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the track surface shall be .375 inch so the car will clear the center guide strip on the track.

Length: Overall length may not exceed 7”

Wheelbase: Wheelbase may not be modified; it must be the same as the official kit of 4 1/4 to 4 5/8 inches.

Axles: Axles shall be only as provided in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit.

Wheels: Wheels shall be only as provided in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit. The wheels shall turn about the axle nails from the kit. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body, and MUST be placed in the original 'axle grooves' in the supplied wooden block. It must be obvious to the judges that the grooves, wheels, and the nails from the kit are being used. NO washers, bushings, bearings or springs are allowed. Wheels may be sanded to remove the flashing only. Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass nor in reducing the wheel width from the original kit wheels. NO reductions in width or diameter, or changes in shape are allowed.

Weight: The weight of the race-ready car must not exceed five (5) ounces as measured on the official scales.

Lubricants: Only dry lubricants such as graphite will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. No liquids or loose materials of any kind are permitted on the car. Lubricants may not foul the track.

The Race Area:
Only race officials may enter the track area. This rule will be strictly enforced.

NO ADDITIONAL LUBRICANTS MAY BE USED ONCE THE CARS ARE REGISTERED!

Scouting encourages good sportsmanship!!
Un sportsmanlike conduct by any participant or spectator will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.

Sportsmanship
Two things the Pinewood Derby requires each participant to learn are:

1. The craft skills necessary to build a car
2. The rules that must be followed.

Even more important, though, is how we act and behave while participating in the Pinewood Derby or any other group activity. This is called sportsmanship.

Three Important Things about Sportsmanship
